Obama Already Setting Up His Gestapo (Updated 10/12/08)
Update (10/12/08): After reading this, see my blog titled “Obama’s Gestapo Strikes TV News Station?” ( Link ) for an update to this story, including the reason why my blog seems to describe the news story much more harshly than does the video that appears on the news station’s web site. Stories like this are just plain scary. They also make charges of Bush running a police state sound even more ridiculous than they are.
Barack Obama’s campaign has recruited sheriffs and prosecutors in Missouri to the “Barack Obama Truth Squad” to target “anyone who lies or runs a misleading television ad” about him. ( Source -> )
Now let’s take a look at things that Obama would consider lies or misleading.
In last night’s presidential debate, McCain criticized Obama for publicly talking about launching military strikes into Pakistan. Obama’s response: “Nobody talked about attacking Pakistan.” Yet these comments made by Obama are documented and were well-publicized at the time they were made:
Obama said if elected in November 2008 he would be willing to attack inside Pakistan with or without approval from the Pakistani government, a move that would likely cause anxiety in the already troubled region.
“If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won’t act, we will,” Obama said.
McCain also hammered Obama for his statements that he would meet with rogue world leaders without precondition. Obama responded: “Look, I mean, Senator McCain keeps on using this example that suddenly the president would just meet with somebody without doing any preparation, without having low-level talks. Nobody’s been talking about that, and Senator McCain knows it.” Yet his own campaign site states:
Obama supports tough, direct presidential diplomacy with Iran without preconditions.
McCain also charged last night that Obama has voted in the U.S. Senate to increase taxes on people who make as little as $42,000 a year. Obama’s response: “That’s not true, John. That’s not true.” But factcheck.org says:
So it’s true that a single taxpayer making $42,000 this year would see an income tax increase – of $15. That assumes the provision Obama voted for had been enacted and assumes further that the taxpayer did not qualify for more than the standard deduction.
Another claim that McCain made was that Admiral Michael Mullen has suggested that Obama’s plan for Iraq is dangerous. Obama’s response: “That’s not the case. What he said was a precipitous withdrawal would be dangerous. He did not say that. That’s not true.” What did Admiral Mullen say?
In fact, ‘Fox News Sunday’ host Chris Wallace asked Mullen to put Obama’s plan aside and speak to the general consequences of removing all combat troops from Iraq within the next two years.
Mullen responded, “”I think the consequences could be very dangerous in that regard. I’m convinced at this point in time that…making reductions based on conditions on the ground are very important.”
And what is Obama’s plan? From his own campaign site:
The removal of our troops will be responsible and phased, directed by military commanders on the ground and done in consultation with the Iraqi government. Military experts believe we can safely redeploy combat brigades from Iraq at a pace of 1 to 2 brigades a month that would remove them in 16 months. That would be the summer of 2010 – more than 7 years after the war began.
So Obama’s plan is to have our troops withdrawn by 2010. Admiral Mullen says that withdrawing our troops within the next two years would be dangerous. Logically, Mullen thinks that Obama’s plan is dangerous.
It is clear from these examples that Obama deems these truths that reflect negatively on him as “lies” or “misleading.” And he has his “Barack Obama Truth Squad” out to silence (and perhaps prosecute?) anyone who “lies” or runs “misleading” ads about him. Thus, it would seem that he would actually have this squad target anyone who says something negative about him, even if it is the truth. Would an Obama presidency also follow this model? Goodbye First Amendment. You will be missed.
